Each year Secret7” selects 7 tracks from 7 different musicians - designers are invited to submit vinyl artwork for them - 700 vinyl covers are selected. I entered this design for 'Pipes of Peace' by Paul McCartney and my cover got into the exhibition!! I haven't been able to share this until now, it was great knowing my work was being displayed at NOW Gallery in London! Thank you everyone who went and saw it and who bid on my work at the auction.
DESIGN STATEMENT
I was inspired mostly by soul album covers from the 70s, as well as the general psychedelic design aesthetic present at that time, continuing through the 80s when ‘Pipes of Peace’ was released. I like the bold use of colour and movement through organic shapes, often forming waves, present in this era of design.
It seemed fitting for a song so hopeful and fun, with such a profound and clear rhythm, to use this retro aesthetic. The song itself is also fairly experimental musically, seen through the use of synths to create an other worldly soundscape, which lends itself to more experimental image-making.
Through hand cut collage techniques I use the metaphor of pipes, featured in the song, both to show the flow and energy of the sound I experienced listening to the song for the first time, but also the hopeful meaning of peace in wartimes, shown through the torrents of colour surging through the darkness. Bringing light, music, hope, to a broken world.
